Every hour of every day, two Americans under [the age of] 20 are infected with HIV, and a lot of girls are contracting it - not from one-night stands but from longer relationships [where the boy was not honest about, or unaware of his condition]. (Booth, S. 1999)

Nationwide, there are an estimated 20,000 infected children and teenagers, including those with full-blown AIDS, born to infected mothers, according to health officials. The officials also say that between 2,000 and 5,000 of these children are getting old enough to have their own children. (Richardson, L. 1999)

Approximately 2,100 American teenagers are HIV-positive as a result of mother-to-child transmission. Overall, there are about 10,000 HIV-positive children and adolescents in the United States. (Kann, L. 2000)

CDC [The Center for Disease Control] estimates that about 40,000 new infections occur in the United States each year, with about half of those among [African-Americans] and about 15% among [Latin-Americans]. (Kann, L. 2000)

The overall number of HIV infections among women declined by 9% between 1994 and 1998, according to CDC [The Center for Disease Control]. (Kann, L. 2000)

According to a study, which is part of the ongoing Reaching for Excellence in Adolescent Care and Health project, only 41% of HIV-positive teens reported taking their medications all the time. (Elliott, V. 2001)
